Project Focus:
McFarland Press Building:
Harrisburg, PA
Investment Tax Credit Consultation
The McFarland Press Building is an impressive
landmark situated in Harrisburg's Mount Pleasant Historic District. Originally constructed
in 1880 as a school for the growing neighborhood of Allison Hill, the building is
significant for its association with J. Horace McFarland, a local and national civic
leader who converted it into a printing company in 1890. McFarland used his influence to
help renew Harrisburg during the City Beautiful movement of the early 20th century, and
played a key role in the establishment of the National Park Service.
Noble Preservation consulted on design issues and completed
state and federal documentation for the rehabilitation of the McFarland, a project which
rescued an important landmark from neglect and created much-needed housing in an
at-risk neighborhood just blocks away from the Pennsylvania State Capitol. This
rehabilitation was distinguished as Preservation Pennsylvania's 1998 Award for the
rehabilitation of a Commercial/Industrial property.
