Historic Building Preservation Plan,
Historic Structures Report Update, Finishes Analysis
Stunning decorative finishes, abstracted
artistic components and brilliantly designed works in bronze and aluminum - all
characteristic of Art Deco architecture - characterize the 1934 United States Custom House
in Philadelphia. Designed by architects Ritter & Shay to resemble a lighthouse
on the exterior and with extraordinary works in metals, stone, plaster and murals inside,
the building's overall aesthetic scheme comprises one of Philadelphia's most important
structures.
Noble Preservation worked in
conjunction with Ueland Junker & McCauley Architects to complete several
time-sensitive projects in preparation for the 1993 restoration of the building.
Included was a review and amendment to previously completed finish studies which then
provided a basis for restoring many interior schemes, based on documentary
information, on-site investigations and laboratory examination. We also conducted
tests on architectural and sculptural metals which eventually provided the basis for
specifications and project work.
As part of the project, we assembled an
update to the Historic Structures Report which presents detailed information on historic
systems and materials throughout the building. Specific concentrations included the
restoration and rehabilitation of historic metals, travertine, brick, limestone, painted
plaster and terrazzo. |
